Mastering the Complexity of Corporate Headshots: A Case Study
Corporate headshots and portrait photography are far from simple point-and-shoot tasks. They’re a blend of artistry, technical skill, and keen understanding of the client’s brand identity. In this blog post, we’ll unpack a recent project for a high-profile financial firm in London, revealing the layers of complexity and skill that go into crafting the perfect corporate image.
Earlier this year, I was presented with an exciting yet challenging opportunity: a corporate headshots and portrait photography project for a financial company located in the heart of London.
This wasn’t just another assignment; it was a complex, multi-layered, endeavor that required meticulous planning, creative problem-solving, and a deep understanding of the client’s needs. In this post, I’ll take you behind the scenes to show you the intricacies involved in pulling off such a project successfully.
The Brief and Initial Planning
Securing the project was just the first step in a long journey. The next phase involved in-depth planning and coordination with the client and their web designer.
We held a detailed meeting where we discussed everything from the types of shots needed, the backdrop preferences, to the specific locations within the office where the shoot would take place. This level of planning is not just beneficial but essential for executing complex projects that involve multiple variables.
The Challenge: More Than Just Headshots
As we delved deeper into the planning process, our meeting turned into a whirlwind of ideas, requirements, and logistical challenges. My client had a clear vision: they wanted headshots that were both professional and personable, capturing the essence of each team member. But the brief didn’t stop there.
In a surprising twist, the client also wanted environmental portraits set against the iconic backdrops of Hyde Park and Marble Arch. Additionally, they requested office lifestyle images to capture the day-to-day dynamics of their workspace, as well as outdoor shots showcasing the surrounding location of their office.
The scope was expansive, involving the photography of 25 team members. This new set of requirements necessitated a complete reevaluation of our initial plans. It meant additional setup, more equipment, and extended post-processing time. This experience served as a vivid reminder of the importance of flexibility and adaptability in the ever-changing landscape of corporate photography.
Equipment and Setup
Preparing for a project of this magnitude is no small feat. Given the client’s specific requirements and the limitations of the shooting location, I had to be extremely selective about the equipment I used.
This involved investing in a new white paper background for the headshots, extra rechargeable batteries for my speedlites, and even a complete overhaul of my flash remote triggering system. Every piece of equipment was carefully chosen to ensure the smooth execution of this complex project.
